Flooding doesn’t just destroy homes; it contaminates water sources. Our programs focus on providing clean water and sanitation solutions during climate crises.
The infant mortality rate in South Sudan in 2006 was 102 per 1000 live births. Which was the ninth highest in the world. In the same year, the maternal mortality rate was 2054 per 100,000 live births, rated the highest in the world. Nutritional intake remains a challenge with 33% of the children under the age of 5 moderately or severely underweight and 34% suffering from Moderate or severe stunting (SSDP, 2011).
WASH underpin many of children’s fundamental human rights, and ultimately national development. In South Sudan, two decades of sustained conflict and neglect have turned potable water into a treasured and scarce resource.
Limited access to water and sanitation contributed to poor child health – a third of children under the age of five suffer from diarrhea. Water has also been a source of much of the internal conflict between communities due to the limited number of water points.
WASH projects may prove to be an uphill task and inadequate without having the appropriate tools and instruments. AEF is lobbying to try and contribute in facilitate the process to ensure provision of water, sanitation and hygiene components.
